Information on transport, storage, safety and disposal of batteries and accumulators
Information on transport, storage, safety and disposal of batteries and accumulators

At European level, the following industry associations supply information on the regulation of transport, storage, safety and disposal of batteries and accumulators:

European states are committed to the EU Battery Directive 2006/66/EC
European states are committed to the EU Battery Directive 2006/66/EC

The European Battery Directive 2006/66 / EC is the most important legislation for batteries in the EU market.

The directive applies to all types of batteries, i.e. on

    • Portable batteries and rechargeable batteries
    • Starter batteries (Automotive batteries)
    • Industrial and appliance batteries
    • Storage technologies

The legislation contains provisions on the use of certain substances in batteries and the regulation of labeling requirements. In the case of portable batteries, European legislation also envisaged specific collection targets, which should have been achieved by September 2012, latest 2016 and have now been achieved.

    In particular, the

    • environmentally friendly disposal of batteries and accumulators (battery legislation – BattG)
    • marking of the battery packs with warning symbols, which could be swallowed due to their size
    • child resistant packaging
    • standardization and homogenization of safety symbols.

For example, some warning and indication symbols on battery packs of the VARTA Microbattery:

    Do not throw into fire

    Do not charge

    Do not short-circuit

    Do not open/ disassemble

    Do not insert incorrectly

    Do not deform/ damage

For VARTA Microbattery, very important were the new provisions for hearing aid batteries:

    • only mercury-free hearing aid batteries are permitted and
    • hearing aid batteries are subject to the strict regulations for medical products

Detailed information on the regulations on medical products is summarized in the article on symbols for the labeling of medical devices; Version EN 980: 2008

    Environmental Protection

AT VARTA MICROBATTERY, ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF CORPORATE GOALS

Responsibility for the environment is manifested throughout the entire life cycle of our products. We place uncompromising demands on environmentally friendly development and manufacture and require our products to be safe and have a long service life, whereby sustainable disposal represents a key factor. Thanks to pioneering technologies, we can reduce any long-term impact on the environment, or even completely avoid it. With our own environmental protection guidelines, we set higher standards than those specified by legal regulations.
